That second fire mode was a shotgun. Still, it's good they made one. If the model would ever be used, I'd say it's perfect for small places, and if you put the grenade launcher, you could make great commandos with it, blowing up bases and all that stuff. Just saying

Actually, the second mode is probably just as useful as an underslung grenade launcher; more useful in certain settings such as urban warfare of CQB. You can’t use a grande launcher at a range inside it's kill radius. You can use a shotgun at close range.

Although; against the xenomorph enemy, the shotgun may lead to acid splash back….
