My take on AVP for Playstation 3

Well..I stated before in the "what do you think about AVP Demo" thread that I was disappointed in the game. While the demo did have me a bit angry at Sega and Rebellion, I am happy to say that the full game is much much better!

My brother came over the other night and surprised me by buying me a copy of AVP for my PS3. He has it for Xbox 360 and knew that I wouldn't buy it right away due to my ranting...so he went out and bought me a copy as a gift. What a swell guy!!

What I really like about this game is the campaign. The Marine campaign is really creepy and has you on the edge of your seat due to the fact that at any moment you could get killed, or something could jump out and scare you. I think the super limited visibility with the shitty flashlight is perfect. The guy from Game informer magazine is a total jackass IMO after I played this game. I'm positive the game makers WANTED it to be like this. If everything was just lit up, then the sense of horror would be stripped of the game. The Aliens saga was meant as a horror movie, and so should the game be. The team did a great job of this. Also, last time I chimed in, I was really bitching about the graphics. Well...it seems that the graphics on the full game are pretty damn good. The aliens and Predators seem to have a lot more detail, and the environment is much richer. Still not as good as a lot of the next gen games out there, but I'm not complaining any more.

As for the Multi-player, its pretty good. Enough for me to crave playing it again and again. I really like infestation mode, Predator hunt, and Domination. The Predator hunt is a pretty unique mode that currently has my attention the most. Also, I'm glad that it's much easier finding a match to get into with the full game. The demo seemed to have a lot of trouble finding a match. I wish that the game did have more multiplayer levels in it (mostly more urban environments like seen in the Aliens movies), but I'm sure that if ACM comes out, then that will satisfy my craving.

All in all, I think this game is a winner to Alien and Predator fans.

I'm sure this post states stuff that everyone already knows, but I had to let it off my chest.

On a side note, it seems that they are playing the movie Aliens on TV a lot lately. At least once a week I can find it on the TV while channel surfing. I wonder if this has anything to do with the game being released. Probably not, but I think its pretty cool.

Glad you liked It. I have played half way through both predator and marine campaigns so far, and this game definitely rocks.

I had a big headache trying to figure out how to finish with those shuttering/freezings issues and the memory leaks on the PC version (PC here), but when I did, I enjoyed this game like 10 years old kid.

Only thing I don,t like is that in MP the maps are almost all outdoor, and that doesn,t help to the "alien atmosphere" you know.

I agree with you on the outdoor maps. I think they are great because it feels a lot like Predator, but they should have included more inside, industrial type maps. All of the Alien movies took place in tight cor doors, with lots of steam and environmental spooky stuff going on.

I'm sure ACM will satisfy my urges for that though. I hope in ACM there will be a multiplayer level in the Sulako and on Fury 161.

I've enjoyed it so far, mostly. I've been playing single player and I'm going to work through the campaigns once at least before I embarrass myself online. I'm playing through the Pred campaign at the mo. I started the Alien one but got a little disorientated and struggled with the surface transition (down to my mouse3 button not being very clickable).

I expect to be scared witless by the Marine campaign so I'm going to save that one until last.

Game play has been simple. The pred weapons are awesome and the kill animations impressive.

My only gripe has been the slow down suffered. I have a decent enough machine. A 260 GTX card and 4gig of ram and a high core 2 duo processor.

I get major lag on some areas, a lot of the time when interfacing with energy points. I think once the control issues are worked out it might be better. I have a 360 pad that I might try.

I too had same problems. I have quite a powerful rig like you but It doesn,t seem to count for this PORT game. Once I lowered TEXTURES to medium, turn VSYNC off, SHADOWS to medium, ANISOTROPIC FILTER to 1X, and lowered my resolution to 1400x900, the game became playable, and It still looks good you,ll see.

I suggest you to do the same, and you,ll see all those problems gone, although I understand that with our rigs we shouldn,t be doing this, but I,m sorry..., we have no choice.

I,m starting to suspect that textures = high and shadows =high and the anisotropic filter are meant to be used on directx11 only.

I think it's my resolution then as I turned down everything but still ran it at 1680 x 1050.

It looks gorgeous, but gameplay first, right?
